Enjoy a round of golf and a round of refreshments at Rowallan Castle Golf Club in Kilmaurs. This grand golf club boasts a state-of-the-art clubhouse, in addition to a dazzling glasshouse restaurant whose bar offers views of the 8th green and par-five 9th hole. There’s also a refreshment terrace on which to enjoy a cold drink while the sun is shining. Most golfers, of course, will be more concerned with the quality of the course itself – and there can be little cause for complaint with the 7,000 yards at Rowallan Castle. The estate itself was first laid down 700 years ago, and those playing 19 holes (yes, 19!) can test their wits against a challenging course busy with flora and fauna, as well as meandering streams, bountiful woodland and even a Bronze Age settlement. Colin Montgomery and his team have designed an excellent golf course and club, one that is worth joining if you can manage the membership fees, not least to tap the knowledge of resident PGA Professional Ross Aitken, who coaches players at the club’s Golf Academy. That 19th hole, incidentally, is known as the “Money Hole” and is a testing long-par three. Give it a go.
